THE SIDELINES : U.S. Women’s Walk Record Set

Debbi Lawrence broke the American record in the women’s 10-kilometer walk by nearly 30 seconds in winning her third national title at the Mobil Outdoor Track and Field Championships today at Norwalk.

Lawrence, 28, of Columbus, Ind., was timed in 46 minutes, 14.4 seconds for the 6.2-mile event at Cerritos College. The previous mark of 46:44.1 was set in last year’s national championships by Lynn Weik.

Lawrence, the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials winner, won her first two national titles in 1984 and 1986.
