THE SIDELINES : Hagler Hangs Up Gloves--Again
Marvelous Marvin Hagler, former world middleweight boxing champion, reportedly has said again he has retired from boxing.
“I have no plans to fight,” the Boston Herald today quoted Hagler as saying Thursday in Rome, where he attended the United States-Italy World Cup soccer match. “I’m retired from fighting, and I want to concentrate on acting.”
He told The Boston Globe he’s “retired. I’m into something else now. Anything could happen, but I hope nothing does. I have to establish myself in what I’m doing now.”
The former Massachusetts resident now lives in Milan, Italy, and is making his third Italian film, “Heat of Fire.”
His last fight was April 6, 1987, when he lost his title to Ray Leonard in a controversial, 12-round, split decision.
He announced his retirement in the days after the fight, but there have been reports he would return to the ring.
