ICN Wins Approval From Ireland: ICN Pharmaceuticals said the government of Ireland has approved the sale of its antiviral drug ribavirin for people infected with the virus that causes AIDS, the first time any nation has authorized the use of the controversial drug for AIDS-related conditions. The Costa Mesa-based company said Ireland will allow the sale of ribavirin for the treatment of individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has refused to approve ribavirin for the treatment of HIV-infected individuals, even on a research basis.
