A court on Friday convicted a researcher for a government scientific agency of passing on information on nuclear research to the East German secret service for two decades.

Rolf Dobbertin, an East German national, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

At the start of his trial Wednesday, Dobbertin defended his actions by saying East German intelligence officials had coerced him into providing information.

Dobbertin, 55, had testified that he was awarded a grant to study abroad, but was not allowed to accept it unless the secret service approved.
