‘Chief Needs Backup’

I would like to thank you for your supportive editorial (June 3), “Emergency: Police Chief Needs Backup.”

As you have noted in your editorial, the Oak View area is truly a challenge and, if ignored, has the potential for substantially impacting our entire community.

I think it is important that everyone realize that a stronger police presence in the Oak View area, while needed, is not in and of itself the answer to the current problems we are experiencing.

It is important that the community work together as a team and pool its resources, knowledge and, most importantly, its enthusiasm to strengthen this area of our community through a combined effort, rather than tear it down through neglect and criticism.

While I recognize my fiscal responsibilities as the chief of police, I believe that this area of our community is a “broken window” that, if not repaired, will result in more far-reaching problems in the future.
