Curfew Lifted to Let People Buy Food
Authorities briefly lifted a curfew in Srinagar on Saturday to enable an estimated 600,000 residents to buy food and other necessities after being confined to their homes for four days.
Stores did a brisk business. Residents talked of harassment and house-to-house searches by the Indian army during the curfew.
State authorities, who are trying to break a popular independence movement in Jammu and Kashmir, reimposed the curfew at noon after a six-hour break.
A “civil curfew” called by Moslem Kashmiri militants also ended Saturday, allowing shops and restaurants in the main commercial district to open for the first time in three days.
