NAMES IN THE NEWS : Matilda Cuomo: N.Y. Meets Italy
New York First Lady Matilda Cuomo signed two agreements today to expand scientific and medical exchanges between her state and Italy.
“It is always a great pleasure for me to return to the country of my parents, relatives and friends--especially to take part in efforts to deepen the friendship between Italy and New York state,” Cuomo said shortly before signing the documents.
The wife of Gov. Mario M. Cuomo is on a weeklong visit to promote children’s rights, economic and cultural exchanges and the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America.
She signed the accords as the co-chairwoman of the New York State program that promotes cooperation with Italy.
Under one of the agreements, Italy’s National Research Council will exchange information and scientists with the New York State Science and Technology Foundation.
Through another accord, the Italian council will set up research fellowships with the Graduate School of Public Health at the State University of New York and share information on health issues.
Cuomo told reporters that she also was working with Italy’s hot line to aid abused children. New York State will participate in Italy’s first national conference on child abuse in May, 1991, she said.
