Tomkus on Volleyball Tour With U.S. National Team

Daiva Tomkus, the Pacific 10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Year the past two seasons at UCLA and a three-time All-American, has been named to the travel squad for the latest women’s USA National team volleyball tour of the Soviet Union.

Tomkus, a middle blocker from West Hills and a graduate of Chaminade Prep, is making her first tour with the team, which will play in the Chinilin Cup tournament in Chelyabinsk.

Pat Bryant of Cleveland High, a second-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the recent amateur baseball draft, has been reassigned to the Indians’ Gulf Coast League rookie team in Orlando, Fla.

Bryant, who batted .388 last season, originally was scheduled to play in Burlington.

Ventura College baseball Coach Gary Anglin will offer a baseball camp for youngsters aged 7 to 18.

Camps will be held from Monday through Friday, July 9-13 and July 16-20. They will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the college.

Cal Lutheran pitching Coach Marty Slimak will hold a series of baseball camps for boys aged 8 to 13 at Cal Lutheran this summer.

The camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 9-13 and 23-27, and Aug. 6-10 and 13-17.

Phil Matthews and Ned Mircetic, the Ventura College men’s and women’s basketball coaches, will play host to a summer camp for boys and girls aged 8 to 16.

Sessions will be offered Monday through Friday, July 2-7, July 16-20, and July 23-27.

Motivation, skippered by Bob Goodwin of the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, sailed a 20-mile course in 3 hours 35 seconds to win the third race of the Ventura County Off-Shore Racing Circuit.

Other winning boats included Shooter (3:30.16) in the Olson 30 One-Design Class, Vanishing Girl (2:58:24) in Class A, and Color Blind (3:01:51) in Class C.
