Wedding Sparks Clash in India; at Least 4 Die
Fights broke out between residents of two villages during a wedding procession in Agra, and at least four people were killed, news reports said Sunday.
Police opened fire several times to control the rioting, which began late Friday and continued Saturday, newspapers said.
The trouble began late Friday in Panwari village outside Agra, which is the site of the Taj Mahal. Residents objected when thousands of people who were to take part in the wedding tried to walk through their town.
The villagers said they didn’t want the celebrants in Panwari because the wedding participants belonged to a low Hindu caste. The villagers, who belonged to the relatively high Jat, or farmer, caste, began hurling stones, and the fighting spread to Agra, the Hindustan Times reported.
