Joseph Murumbi, 79, vice president of Kenya under the young country’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta. Educated in Bangalore, India, Murumbi was a career diplomat and politician, working in Somalia and London, and serving as assistant secretary of the Movement for Colonial Freedom when Kenya was a British colony.
