Joseph Murumbi; Former Vice President of Kenya
Joseph Murumbi, 79, vice president of Kenya under the young country’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta. Educated in Bangalore, India, Murumbi was a career diplomat and politician, working in Somalia and London, and serving as assistant secretary of the Movement for Colonial Freedom when Kenya was a British colony. After independence, he was a member of the Kenya House of Representatives, minister of state, minister of external affairs and, in 1966, vice president. On Friday in Nairobi, after a long illness.
