From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Chinese dissident Fang Lizhi, freed by a government eager to improve ties with the West, said today he will continue to work for “progress and development” in China.

Fang and his wife, Li Shuxian, arrived in Britain Monday night after the Chinese government agreed to permit them to leave the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

The couple had sought refuge there after the Chinese government’s June 4, 1989, military crackdown on the pro-democracy movement.

“As citizens of China, we hope to do whatever we can in the future to help China’s continuing progress and development,” Fang said in a statement issued through the Royal Society in London.

The statement was issued after the society canceled tentative plans to present Fang at a news conference.
