New York Cardinal O’Connor’s Warning to Catholic Politicians

Share

Thankfully columnist Thomas saw a distinction cartoonist Paul Conrad missed the day before. In portraying Cardinal O’Connor quenching President Kennedy’s eternal flame, Conrad forgot Kennedy’s vow to resign if obedience to his faith ever conflicted with the presidency.

It’s unfortunate that Catholics may have to forfeit political offices for their beliefs. Yet this is a traditional conflict.

Numerous Catholic politicians claim they “personally” believe their faith’s teaching that abortion is the taking of an innocent life. Yet in the name of “pluralism” they support pro-abortion laws. All voters, for or against abortion, should be wary of these office-seekers. If they won’t risk an election for what they “in their consciences” hold is innocent blood, will they do different for any other issue?
