The City Council has approved an agreement with the Immigration and Naturalization Service to house federal prisoners in the South Gate city jail.

The agreement was approved Tuesday. It allows the INS to place a total of eight prisoners a week in the 35-bed jail.

Police Chief Ronald George said the move will help relieve overcrowded conditions in jail facilities in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The prisoners will remain only for a brief time before being deported back to their own counties.

South Gate will receive $70 a day or $40 a half day for each inmate. Officials estimate the city will receive approximately $90,000 a year under the arrangement.
