WORLD IN BRIEF : CHINA : President Yang Has Appendectomy

President Yang Shangkun, 83, underwent surgery for acute appendicitis and is recovering well, Premier Li Peng said. The Foreign Ministry said he entered the hospital Monday for the operation. China’s presidency is largely ceremonial. But Yang is also a member of the Communist Party’s policy-making Politburo and vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission.
