Queen Elizabeth II will ignore the warnings of Quebec politicians and visit the province Sunday on Canada Day, an organizer said today.

Politicians have warned that the queen would not be welcome in their French-speaking province on the 123rd anniversary of Canada’s confederation.

Quebec is seeking greater autonomy from Canada after the collapse of the Meech Lake constitutional amendment that would have recognized the province as a distinct society and granted it special powers.

The queen will preside over Canada Day celebrations Sunday in Ottawa and also visit Hull, Que., across the river.

Clement Toussignant, a government organizer of the visit, said the queen discussed the situation with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on Wednesday night and decided to go ahead with the visit to the province.
