WORLD : Pope Supports Polish Premier
Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki has received Pope John Paul II’s support as he prepares for a weekend showdown with Lech Walesa over Solidarity’s electoral machine.
The official news agency PAP today issued a letter of encouragement from the Polish-born Pope on the eve of a dispute over control of the powerful citizens’ committees.
Walesa accuses Mazowiecki of trying to create a new power monopoly by seizing the committees.
But the Pope appeared to throw his weight behind Mazowiecki’s plans to turn them into a broad pro-government movement supporting his efforts to build democracy.
