A strike by French air traffic controllers has forced the country’s airlines to cancel many flights and has disrupted foreign traffic, airport officials said today.

The three-day stoppage affects France’s main northern center at Athins-Mons that controls traffic at Paris’ two international airports, Charles de Gaulle and Orly.

Air France canceled 60% of its medium-haul flights but said it would maintain scheduled long-distance flights throughout the strike, which began today.

The domestic airline Air Inter also canceled two out of three flights but said there would be no disruption in flights to the French island of Corsica, a popular holiday spot.

Airport officials said every effort was being made to maintain flights by foreign carriers, but delays were expected.

Air traffic controllers want pay and staff increases to cope with what they say is a mounting workload caused by the boom in air travel.
