WORLD IN BRIEF : INDIA : Gandhi Asks Youths to Bar Rights Group

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ordered members of the youth wing of his opposition Congress-I party to physically stop Amnesty International officials from entering India to investigate alleged human rights abuses. The government last week lifted a six-month ban on the London-based organization’s entry to India after members of the U.S. Congress urged New Delhi to allow it to visit Punjab and Kashmir to investigate alleged excesses by security forces battling separatist militants.
