NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Emergency Declared as Wildfires Rage

Heavy smoke from a 14,000-acre wildfire closed part of the Alaska Highway, blocking the main road into Alaska as forest and brush fires burned across the nation’s largest state. Gov. Steve Cowper declared a state of emergency and called on the Alaska National Guard to help fight the fires. The blaze that closed the highway near Tok about 175 miles southeast of Fairbanks also closed two airports, a federal Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman said.
