WORLD : U.S. Cleric in Philippines Killed
A 70-year-old American Protestant missionary was stabbed to death by a group of men led by his Filipino father-in-law at the family home in the southern Philippines, a military report said today.
The victim, identified by police as Rev. Jorge Rechtell of California, was the second missionary killed in eight days. He was also the seventh foreigner stabbed to death in the Philippines in the last six weeks.
The report said Rechtell’s Filipino wife, Maria Fe, was taken for questioning after her husband’s murder Sunday in Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte province, about 440 miles south of Manila.
Three of the attackers were arrested but the victim’s father-in-law escaped, it said.
