Wendy Lian Williams’ last visit to the U.S. Olympic Festival was not pleasant. This one should help erase the memories.

Williams, the bronze medalist at the 1988 Olympics, dominated the competition Sunday on the last day of the Festival in winning the 10-meter platform championship. In her only other festival appearance, in 1985, she had finished seventh.

“It was disastrous,” she said. “That was so long ago. I feel like a different person now. In those days I felt so young and naive and scared up there.”

Although she didn’t do as well on her final dive as she had wanted, the 23-year-old from Bridgeton, Mo., piled up 443.16 points to beat Mary Ellen Clark of Newton Square, Pa., by nearly 50 points.

The men’s 10-meter champion was Matt Scoggin of Austin, Texas, who also won the event last year. Scoggin scored 660.30 points to beat Pat Jeffery of Madison, N.J., who had 621.90.

Olympian Brandy Johnson won her third gymnastics gold medal, taking the vault in record-setting fashion.

She received a 9.90 in the vault despite an ankle injury she sustained Friday on the beam.

Her 9.90 beat the record of 9.462 set in 1989 by Amy Scherr.

In track and field, Hollis Conway won the high jump by clearing 7 feet, 8 inches, but failed in three tries to break his American record of 7-10.

Conway failed to clear 7-10 1/2, but he still beat Jake Jacoby of Boise, Idaho, who cleared 7-7.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee learned minutes before the meet that her results would count in the javelin because another competitor withdrew. She had planned to be just an exhibition athlete in the event.

She finished sixth with a throw of 145-7. Also, her 1,600-meter relay team finished third.

Table tennis player Sean O’Neill of McLean, Va., won the gold medal in men’s singles, giving him a record-tying 16 career gold medals. That tied him with roller speed skater Dante Muse of West Des Moines, Iowa., who picked up his 16th earlier in the week.
