ON DECK: UCI chemist F. Sherwood Rowland, part of a team that discovered that man-made gases were destroying the ozone layer, may join a federal project studying global environmental changes. . . . If the regents approve an accord with the government on Friday, Rowland would become co-director of the project’s western center at UC Davis. . . . Other centers would be at Harvard, Indiana and Tulane. “Changes in the atmosphere will be one of the most important security issues facing the United States during the next 10 to 15 years,” Rowland says.
