PARIS : Two Plus Four Plus Poles

Share

Poland joins the so-called two-plus-four German unification talks in the French capital today hoping to persuade the four World War II powers to back its demands for ironclad assurances that union of the two Germanys will not jeopardize its own frontiers.

Warsaw has urged the United States, the Soviet Union, Britain and France to maintain their rights over Germany until a Polish-German border treaty comes into force. Poland gained former German territory in 1945 in compensation for eastern lands it lost to the Soviet Union.

However, there’s no four-power support for the Polish proposal, which could delay unification for months. And Warsaw is now likely to push instead for a strong statement on the border issue in the final two-plus-four agreement expected this fall.
