WORLD IN BRIEF : CANADA : Indians Call for End to Armed Standoff

Hundreds of Algonquins gathered in front of Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa to ask the federal government to intervene in a seven-day armed standoff between Quebec Mohawks and police. The Mohawks have set up a blockade to stop construction of a golf course in Oka, 20 miles west of Montreal, on what they claim is ancestral land.
