Merger talks have been suspended between Sulcus Computer of Greensburg, Pa., and Cam Data Systems, a Fountain Valley maker of computers and point-of-sale systems for the retail industry.

The two companies announced in June that Sulcus planned to acquire Cam Data in a $2-million stock swap. Jeff Ratner, chairman and chief executive of Sulcus, said his company remains interested in buying Cam Data but the companies could not reach a final agreement last week as originally expected.

Carl Smith, Cam Data’s president and chief executive, said the two companies agreed that the timing for a merger was wrong and that talks should be suspended. He said there would be no impact on the company’s operations.
