Gauging Racism and Greed in Hollywood

Share

Jack Mathews’ July 14 column was the sort of apologist gobbledygook that has kept blacks, Latinos and others from being seen in front of the camera as well as behind it (“In Hollywood, the Only Creed Is Plain Greed”).

Mathews’ premise is that it is greed, not racism, that is to blame for the current state of affairs. He cynically asks for any Latinos or blacks who can deliver a top star to show up for work on Monday. That’s like asking us to apply for membership to the country club--that is, if we already live in the whites-only estates.

The most enduring lesson I’ve learned in the nearly four years that I’ve worked with the National Hispanic Media Coalition is that racism is stronger than greed.

And a word about the comments made at the NAACP convention regarding Jews: Blaming Jews makes about as much sense as blaming Episcopalians. After so many years of struggle, it should by now be clear that blaming another much-maligned group only allows those responsible to remain irresponsible much longer.
