WORLD IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : 45 Police Reportedly Flee Rebel Captors
Forty-five Sri Lankan policemen held prisoner by Tamil rebels staged a dramatic escape from their captors, overpowering three of their guards, a senior military official said. Only about 12 of the officers who escaped Tuesday had reached safety, but government helicopters were searching for the others, the official added. The report came as fighting continued in northern Sri Lanka, where security forces killed at least 18 guerrillas of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the rebel group fighting for an independent Tamil nation.
