2 Pleas for Pickwick

Share

Yet another San Fernando Valley legend has died. The Pickwick Ice Arena in Burbank is to close its doors Sept. 30, and there is nothing that the public can do about it.

Speaking as a teen-ager, Pickwick is considered an asset to the community by a large group of teens in the Valley. It’s a place to go and practice, or play hockey, or express your creativity through figure skating.

People should take a moment to recognize the hours that have been spent there training such Olympic stars as Linda Fratianne and Christopher Bowman. If Pickwick hadn’t been there for them, would they have been there for America?

Granted, ice-skating may not be the latest fitness fad, however the rinks should be left open if not for the enjoyment of the sport, then to keep the Olympic dreams alive.

I envy the people in New York. They have Rockefeller Center to skate in. After Pickwick closes, we will have nothing.
