the first time since the 1984 Summer Olympics in a major international meet, two swimmers tied for first place in an event Sunday at the Goodwill Games.

USC senior David Wharton and East Germany’s Patrick Kuehl finished the 400-meter individual medley in 4:17.74.

Kuehl led entering the final 50 meters of the fourth stroke, the freestyle, but Wharton accelerated in the final 10 meters and pulled even at the wall.

“In the freestyle, I kind of paced myself to be able to hold on long enough to come home strong,” said Wharton, the silver medalist in the event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Kuehl was fifth in that race.

In 1984 in Los Angeles, Nancy Hogshead and Carrie Steinseifer both touched the wall at 55.92 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle.
