WORLD : Troops Sent on Baguio Looters
Soldiers were sent to the city of Baguio today after looting erupted in the aftermath of an earthquake that killed more than 1,600 people. Another strong quake hit an island spared by the earlier temblor.
The Philippine House of Representatives called on President Corazon Aquino to suspend for 2 1/2 years payments on the foreign debt to help fund reconstruction. Aquino opposed the resolution, which was sent to the Senate. The measure is non-binding, but House members threatened a compulsory moratorium if Aquino rejected it.
Search teams reported finding more bodies today in remote mountain communities devastated by the July 16 quake, which had a magnitude of 7.7.
Figures released today from the Office of Civil Defense and the Red Cross said at least 1,621 people were killed. More than 3,000 were seriously injured and about 1,000 were missing.
