Black Activist Loses Bid to Remain Free on Bail
A black community activist lost a bid Wednesday to remain free on bail while appealing his conviction on two burglary counts.
Jitu Sadiki, who was sentenced last week to three years and eight months in prison, had sought to be freed on bail while fighting a conviction that he claims is the outgrowth of a racially motivated prosecution.
But Superior Court Judge James Albracht on Wednesday denied Sadiki’s request and Sadiki, 34, will be transferred from County Jail to state prison. He previously served six years in state prison for second-degree murder in the death of a gang member.
He was convicted June 27 of two counts of burglary for breaking into a beauty shop in Culver City and trying to tunnel his way into an adjoining pawn shop in July, 1988.
