WORLD IN BRIEF : KENYA : 4 Held for Seditious Intent; Others Freed
Kenya charged four people with seditious intentions against the government of President Daniel Arap Moi but released three lawyers detained earlier this month in a crackdown on dissent. Former member of Parliament George Anyona, local ruling party official Agustine Njeru Gathaga and former university lecturers Ngotho Kariuki and Edward Oyugi were charged in a Nairobi court with “seditious intentions” and possessing banned literature. But dissident lawyers John Khaminwa, Mohammed Ibrahim and Gitobu Imanyara were freed.
