P.M. BRIEFING : Violence Shuts Brazil Ford Plant
Ford Motor Co.’s Brazil subsidiary has closed its plant indefinitely for repairs after workers went on a rampage for the third time in less than a week.
“Ford Brasil . . . was forced to interrupt operations at the plant from tonight, July 26,” the company said in a statement late Thursday.
Workers broke windows, damaged cars and computer terminals and started a fire in the administration building at Ford’s plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo in Sao Paulo state.
Miguel Jorge, vice president of corporate affairs, said workers threw Molotov cocktails. He estimated that 80% of the plant’s installations suffered some damage.
The company will not present any more proposals to the 900 workers who have been on strike since June 11, paralyzing output, Jorge said, noting that the workers have refused every proposal made by Ford so far.
The 46-day-old strike has cost Ford 24,000 cars in lost output and $235 million in lost revenue, he said.
