Opening of Library-Museum Returns Nixon to Limelight
Most of the media would have us believe that the attempted “bugging” of the Democratic election headquarters at Watergate was the most heinous and unforgiveable crime of the century--I do not.
Iran-Contra was a thousand times more insidious in its undermining of the Congress and turning the government over to secret operations. Still, Ronald Reagan emerged virtually unscathed; even though we know that everything that was done had to have been done with his knowledge.
If the press had cared to do so, it could have crucified John Kennedy for his carryings-on in the White House (and everywhere else, for that matter), which are now well-documented and which, I am sure, were well-known at the time. But, no--Kennedy was Crown Prince of Camelot to the press.
Richard Nixon was a far better President than any of his successors, including George Bush; and I, for one, would vote for him again! Furthermore, I know numbers of people among my friends and acquaintances who feel exactly as I do.
Former Gov. Edmund (Pat) Brown (a Democrat!) summed it up best: “When they finally add up what he’s done, there will be more pluses than minuses.”
