NAMES IN THE NEWS : McGillis Happy With a ‘Nobody’

Actress Kelly McGillis, who starred opposite Tom Cruise in “Top Gun,” says she is perfectly happy being married to an entertainment industry outsider.

Gossip columnists reported erroneously in the past that she had married a French television producer and, on another occasion, an American actor, McGillis said in an interview this week.

She actually married Newport Beach yacht broker Fred Tillman on Dec. 31, 1988, taking it as a compliment when a tabloid paper said she’d married a “complete nobody.”

“I have lived with actors and dated actors and personally I found it really boring. All your life is talking about work or living it,” the 32-year-old actress said. “I wanted something more than that.

“And I obviously met the right person and it really didn’t matter what he did. I don’t care. He’s great.”

McGillis said her marriage and the May birth of daughter Kelsey Lauren has “changed my outlook toward my work.”

“Before, my work was my whole life, and getting married was one step of claiming a personal life and certainly having a child is claiming a much bigger chunk of personal life,” she said. “This little person that looks at me and says, ‘Feed me,’ that’s really important to me now.”
