NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Life Term Urged in Toddler’s Death

A jury voted to spare the life of a man who killed his stepson by plunging him headfirst into a toilet, after a psychologist testified the killer had been a severely abused child. Jurors were split 6 to 6 over whether Thomas Coe, 23, should get the death penalty. The decision, in Ft. Myers, Fla., was interpreted by the court as a recommendation for life in prison.
