Eastern Airlines and eight of its top managers pleaded innocent today in federal court to charges that they falsified safety and maintenance records to avoid expensive flight delays and cancellations.

U.S. District Judge I. Leo Glasser in Brooklyn released all eight without bail and set the next court date for Sept. 12.

The unprecedented indictment that was unsealed July 25 charges the company and the managers with conspiracy to defraud the government, wire fraud, falsification of documents and obstruction of justice.

The alleged violations took place from July, 1985, to October, 1989, at Kennedy International and La Guardia airports in New York, Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta and Eastern headquarters in Miami.
