The United States plans to bring back its Peace Corps volunteers to the Philippines and will consult the military on safe places for postings, U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Platt said today.

Platt accompanied Peace Corps worker Timothy Swanson to a meeting with President Corazon Aquino at Malacanang Palace four days after Communist guerrillas freed Swanson from 50 days of captivity in the central Philippines.

The U.S. government ordered the withdrawal of all 261 Peace Corps volunteers from the country in June, citing threats of rebel violence.

“It is definitely our intention to bring back the Peace Corps volunteers as soon as it is considered safe and agreeable to (the Aquino) government,” Platt told reporters after meeting Aquino.
