GOODWILL GAMES : East Germany’s Hempel Wins Diving

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. —
Jan Hempel of East Germany, fifth in the 1988 Olympics, scored the biggest victory of his career, beating China’s 16-year-old Xiong Ni in the 10-meter platform diving Sunday on the final day of the Goodwill Games.
Ni was the Olympic silver medalist and is the World Cup champion. Hemphill scored 618.81 points to Ni’s 605.76.
Matt Scoggin of Austin, Tex., scored 590.01 for the bronze, beating the Soviet Union’s Georgi Chogovadze, who had 578.91.
