Norwalk : Aid Fund for Quadriplegic Fire Victim Exceeds $10,000

More than $10,000 has been donated to an emergency fund to assist a quadriplegic man whose Norwalk home was gutted in a fire Memorial Day.

Neighbors and sheriff’s deputies rescued John Wise, 31, by pulling him through a bedroom window as flames swept through his house. Wise was treated for smoke inhalation. Wise’s mother, Donna, escaped unharmed from the fire, which apparently was sparked by a smoldering cigarette that had been left in a trash can.

The emergency fund was set up by Dr. Ron Lapin of the Coast Plaza Medical Center, where John Wise was treated.

Donna Wise said the money in the fund will be used to help refurnish the home, which must be rebuilt. John Wise, whose neck was broken in a motorcycle accident in 1985, is staying at a Norwalk convalescent hospital and his mother is living in a trailer donated by friends.
