Liberian Food Situation Critical
War-torn Liberia is desperately short of food and needs emergency aid for the next year, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
The U.N. agency reported today that fighting has disrupted markets, distribution and planting and created several hundred thousand refugees in and outside the country.
“Food shortages are becoming increasingly serious,” said the organization’s quarterly report on food supplies in Africa.
It said Liberia needs about 70,000 tons of food aid over the coming year--three times the amount so far pledged by foreign donors.
