NAMES IN THE NEWS : Driver Trouble for ‘Miss Daisy’

Jessica Tandy had a chauffeur in “Driving Miss Daisy.” Getting a driver in real life may be a little harder for the actress.

Tandy, 81, and her husband, actor Hume Cronyn, 79, wanted to build an apartment above their detached, three-car garage in case they find it necessary to hire domestic help, Cronyn said in a zoning application.

But town zoning regulations require accessory apartments to be built in an existing house or adjacent to it, and the application was rejected.

“We can’t afford to await an immediate crisis before making arrangements for the inevitable day when we must have someone on the premises who can drive a car and give us a hand in the house,” Cronyn said in the application.
