The Soviet hockey federation said it plans to sue the Detroit Red Wings for signing forward Sergei Fedorov.

Fedorov, one of the Soviet national team’s top players, left the team July 21 after a game against the United States at the Goodwill Games.

The Red Wings announced two days later that Fedorov had agreed to a contract.

Tass, the official Soviet news agency, said the Soviet hockey federation and the Soviet Army Club had decided to sue because Fedorov, 20, violated the Soviet labor code.
