The Japanese government today warned one of the country’s biggest oil companies not to make any hasty increases in gasoline or other oil-product prices, said a spokesman for the company, Showa Shell Sekiyu.

The director-general of the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, Kenjiro Ogata, told Showa Shell President Takeshi Itsumi to watch the Middle East situation carefully before raising prices, the company spokesman said.

Gasoline prices in Japan have not yet risen as a result of the Middle East crisis.
