From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Steelmaker to Sell Rail Works: Bethlehem Steel Corp. said it plans to sell its railroad freight-car division as part of an effort to divest assets unrelated to its basic steel-making operations. The division, which is located in Pennsylvania’s Cambria County and employs 1,000 people, produces rail cars, including coal gondolas and haulers for truck trailers. The rail-car division posted revenue of $120 million in 1989. Bethlehem, the nation’s second-largest steel maker, said the division’s earnings increased in the first six months of 1989 because more rail cars were shipped. USW Local 2635 President William Kramer in Johnstown said the announcement was a surprise. He had no further comment.
