NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Homeless Shelter Petitions Presented

Homeless advocates presented to the District of Columbia more than 43,000 petition signatures supporting efforts to restore one of the nation’s most far-reaching overnight shelter laws. The petition calls on the city to restore the former law, which guaranteed shelter to all who need it. In May, the City Council voted to cap how much it would spend annually on homeless housing, give first priority to those who could prove they were city residents and require some to help pay for shelter.
