The Grateful Dead, searching for a replacement after keyboardist Brent Mydland’s fatal drug overdose, has turned to an old and well-known friend: singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby.

Hornsby, in a statement released today through his record company, confirmed he will be sitting in on keyboards for selected Dead dates in the near future, including the band’s run at Madison Square Garden, Sept. 15-20.

Hornsby “has responded affirmatively to a request from his longtime friends to help them through this difficult period,” the statement from RCA Records said.

The Dead has toured in the past with Hornsby, and guitarist Jerry Garcia played on Hornsby’s latest single, “Across the River.” Hornsby’s current album, “A Night on the Town,” with his band, The Range, has gone gold.

Mydland was found dead of a drug overdose in his California home on July 26.
