ATHENS —
A U.S. naval communications base north of Athens was handed back to Greece on Friday as part of American defense budget cuts, the U.S. Embassy in Athens said.
The Nea Makri base, used by the U.S. 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean, is the first of two American bases to be closed in Greece.
The Hellenikon air base, which shares the runway at Athens airport, will cease operations by April, 1991.
