Brazil Looks at Sugar Cane Power: Brazil, one of the world’s biggest sugar producers, is considering using sugar cane residue to generate electricity, newspapers reported. Science Secretary Jose Goldemberg reportedly has suggested the idea to President Fernando Collor de Mello and received an encouraging response. Goldemberg was quoted as saying that if cane residue was used to power small steam generators, Brazil could cut the production costs of its sugar-based motor fuel by 30%.
