Two of the 18 Cubans who were sheltering at the Spanish Embassy in Havana gave themselves up to the authorities Saturday night, the Cuban Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

A ministry statement said that Ricardo Figueroa Laredo was taken to a hospital suffering from a stomach illness, while Felipe Nerey Fonseca was returned to his home.

The two, who had managed to break into the embassy early last July 21 despite a heavy police guard, left voluntarily and without conditions, the statement said.

Cuba has refused to allow any of the embassy refugees to leave the country but has promised they will not be punished if they give themselves up voluntarily.
